Tired Student Seeks Juicy Research Materials

My research isn't always fun, but sometimes it can be extremely entertaining.

I'm in Toronto again, poring over the local postwar scandal sheets. (The image above shows the front page of a May 1946 issue of Hush Free Press.) There's a ton of material for me to draw from -- it's figuring out what to do with it that's the tricky part. At least it's amusing. I should start a list of the best headlines for you. For now, I'll leave you with one of my favourites. It can be hilarious to see the levelling of all variety of "crimes" that happens with placement on the front page...

(Knitting continues at a blistering pace; I've finished both sleeves and the back of Grannie Smith and am nearly done the left front!)

The power of bold-face type. My question: how is exposing the dishes scandalous? It's a nice touch that the wife is washing the dishes while all this is going on. So heteronormative.

I love the Mining Gossip and Information. Obviously the two are not the same.

These are some funny headlines. The font face is almost startling (which I suppose was the point).

And I believe the one about the Don Jail is still true today. ;)

At least she had a place to hang the dish towel.
