I made a shirt. It's OK.

I sewed this shirt yesterday, from the basic Sew U shirt pattern. Even though I sewed the size (large) that best matched my measurements, I think it's a little too big. I think the size might work in a drapier fabric, but with this 100% cotton I'd like it a little more fitted. I know I could alter it, and maybe I will. I do like the fabric (just some basic cotton from Fabricville):

I did the buttonholes today, and I'm quite pleased with them, except they're a little too big -- easy to fix with some bigger buttons. Anyway, there you go. It's a shirt. It's fine. I like sewing quilts better.

[And with that, I promptly got up, got my camera and my quilt-in-progress, and came back outside to take some photos. Then I went into the kitchen and made Bill and I each a vodka-tonic, and now I'm back out on the porch. It's a lovely summer evening. But I digress...]

A bit of the front, and a bit of the back. I'm quite pleased with my hand-stitching. I'm using a leather thimble this time, which I'm finding works well. (With the previous baby quilt that I quilted by hand, I used a metal thimble.) I'm not sure what to do with the binding. I'd originally thought I'd use a solid yellow, but then I thought maybe red would work. I have both. I guess I'll see what strikes me when I get to that point.

Did you notice I got my hair cut? I'm growing out my bangs, which means I'll probably wear them pinned up all summer, but at least the rest can look good. It's kind of hard to take a picture of the back of your own head, but I did my best:

Oh, the skirt in the photo up top? I got in in Vancouver at Smoking Lily; the woman in the store said the print was copied from a vintage plate.

Well! That post was a little bit of everywhere, wasn't it?

I DID notice your haircut and I love it. I also think your definition of "fine" is clearly that of a crazy person since that shirt looks totally awesome! I love that print!

Cute Shirt and cute haircut! I'm thinking of going for a similar cut....also growing out my fringe (er..sorry bangs)!

I still can't ever get my size right on any sewing pattern. I always end up making a size or two too big. I say, add some darts and take in it at the waist!

Cute hair! I've been curious about it ever since the Facebook status update...

Your hair is totally cute! I like the shirt too but I hear you on the wanting something more fitted. Still, if you don't feel like altering it you can wear it open over a tank or cami or something. And maybe washing will give it more drape?

Sigh. You make me want to sew more often. I do little rinky-dink projects (shortening pants, making basic bags), but nothing as cool as a shirt.

The hair and shirt are both very cute but OH MY GOD!! You are an amazing quilter! Such tiny and even stitches! I think we started quilting around the same time and mine are nowhere near as perfect! I really struggle with getting them to look at good on the back as the front. What is your secret (aside from practice, of course)?

It never really occurred to me to make a shirt, but yours looks so great it now seems feasible - thanks for the idea.

And I love the haircut! Kinda like mine, except with bangs (maybe another idea I'll steal...)

Great haircut! I love the layers in the back.
I agree with Rangsiwan: can you just add darts to your shirt? It would be an easy fix (well, theoretically).
Goodness, your quilting sts are tiny!

your hair was the first thing i noticed in that first picture. then i got to the text and i was like "shirt? wha?" ;)

growing out bangs is the WORST, good luck to ya! :)

quilt looks awesome, can't wait to see the full thing.

Super cute hair!

One of the reasons I completely abandoned sewing clothes long ago is the continual need to alter patterns. So. much. trouble.

Even though I apparently don't think so when messing with knitting patterns!

Smoking Lily is the best store. I got my octopus coat at their Victoria store.

Cute hair. Must be nice and cool for summer.

Love your hair! I'm totally thinking of stealing it (the style and cut, that is. not your ACTUAL hair).

I love your new haircut! I am also trying to grow out my bangs - so I feel your pain. Mine are right at the annoying phase right now. Can't quite get it behind my ear - but too short to wear as actual bangs. Argh!

Love the shirt too!

Like Laura, I'd like to steal it too. Your actual hair, that is, since mine is too wavy and frizzy to ever look all perfect like that :)

maybe if you took in the sides and put in some front darts that shirt would work? hhmmmm.

love the new hair cut!

hair is fab! the shirt would fit better if you at a lot of chips. i always found i had to sew the smaller size than the pattern said i needed to. i remember some very nice vodka tonics on your patio in the OK. i think i have a couple of can of tonic at the back of the cupboard...bye.
