Clessidra: Finito

Pattern: Clessidra Stockings from the spring 2007 Knitty
Yarn: SandnesGarn Sisu (colour 9544), 3 balls + a tiny bit of a 4th

Verdict: Meh.

I don't really know what it is, but I'm not in love with these socks. I thought I'd be in love. Maybe I'm just deadly sick of looking at this colour and I just need to put them away till fall. I'm a little annoyed with myself because I knit the second sock more tightly than the first -- probably because I knit Josephine in between, and I found myself knitting that tightly. And it turns out that the second, tighter sock is the one that fits better. I haven't woven in the ends in the first sock, because there is a (tiny) chance that I'll rip it out and reknit it.

I'm also not very happy with the decreases in the stockinette side panels, and I wish I'd done them differently. According to the pattern, the decreases occur in the centre of the panel, but I'd prefer them to be at the edges since they're so visible.

I'll definitely have to sew some elastic into the cuffs to hold up these socks, but I'm just so tired of them that I'm not going to do it now. It's funny, though -- I do think they look nice in these pictures. I guess I just have green-sock-yarn fatigue.

(Mooky says, "But they match my eyes! Therefore, they are exquisite.")

So, Bill and I leave tomorrow for our week-long fishing trip at Crotch Lake. Woot! Very exciting. I'm going to take my blue-herring socks with me to knit, but it's not practical to do two-colour stranded knitting in the boat (unlike doing one-colour knitting, which is entirely practical). With this in mind, when I finished the leg of the first sock I cast on for the second sock; I'm hoping to finish the second leg tonight so I'll just have the two feet to knit on my holiday. I'm halfway there:

Have a great weekend, week, and weekend -- I'll be back in about eight days with stories about a series of giant fish that got away.

I like the socks and I am sure that you will feel better about them come cooler weather. And Mooky is right, they match his eyes. Plus they look really nice against his fur.

those are beautiful! i bet you are just sick of looking at them - that is a lot of green!!!!! put them away until fall and I bet you will have a better outlook on them. I had to sew elastic in my knee highs as well to keep them up....

They do look beautiful in the pictures, but I can understand the fatigue. Put them away til Fall. When you pull them out again you'll be so impressed with them, and yourself.

The new socks are lovely, too.

Have a fabulous time!

I have no idea how you could be meh about those, they are simply gorgeous and look so fabulous with those shoes too! I hope you come around after you've stepped away from them for a while, they are really beautiful!

Well, not having spent my time knitting a sea of green socks, I think they're lovely! (Mooky is totally right) -- your blue herring socks are looking wonderful. Have fun!

Your Clessidra are lovely. I'm sure you'll be really pleased with them in the fall.

Maybe you can wear the larger one on your dominate leg. It might have more muscle, causing the socks to fit better.

Enjoy your Vay-Kay!

I personally love the color of the green socks... I'm all about greens right now.

Great progress on the new socks. They are looking awesome! I feel like I'm not advancing in my projects!

The new socks are in no way meh! Put them in the back of the sock drawer for a few months and you will see them in new light. Maybe fold some elastic thread inside them so you'll remember to do that later, too!

Enjoy your time away. The name Crotch Lake is funny as ever.

i, for one, love them...

can understand the "i've looked at this yarn so long i am beginning to hate it..." syndrom. :)

I think the socks look great, but I know what you mean about looking at something for too long.

Have fun on vacation!

I think they look beautiful. Put them away for a bit and I think you'll like them when you have taken a break.

I think they're fab, and I also think you're right to put them away. When you rediscover them in the fall, you'll likely fall in love. They really are beautiful! Have a great holiday!

The Clessidra socks look gorgeous! I love the cables on the back, and how the cables on the sides come to a V.

Enjoy Crotch Lake! Now that's QUITE the name, and I'm experiencing some very disturbing mental images.

Love the socks!

I also knit on a boat (canoe) while my husband fishes. One of my favorite things to do!

The socks are beautiful! I'm sure you'll love them after you get a break from them.

Have fun at the Crotch!

They're *awesome* Alison! I'm adding my voice to the chorus -- you just need a break from them, I'm sure you'll LOVE wearing them, come Fall. Beautiful :)

Have fun at Crotch Lake!

Alison said...

Oh, they look fantastic! I agree, put them aside for a little while. When fall comes, you will be psyched to have them all ready to wear, while the rest of us will just be casting on. ;)

Hi: my name is Sol, and I just like everything you knit.
You've knited a lot of socks, it must be fun.
Sorry about my english, I'm not a good writer.

Crotch Lake? Really? Sounds scary. Have fun and be safe! (And I love the socks - all of them)

What everyone else (and Mooky) said: so not meh! If they're falling down, don't reknit them. Thread a bit of thin elastic inside the cuff ribbing so that it's hidden but does the job.

Hope your holiday cures your blues (or greens :o)

Dude, I LOVE those socks. I bet you'll love them again come fall.

Romi said...

I think they look great!

And I also love the red, I mean blue herrings. :)

Chiming in to say the socks are absolutely gorgeous--increases and all. They look fab with the shoes, too. It definitely sounds like post-knitting depression syndrome, so it's a good thing you need to put them away for now. But clearly there are lots of good homes willing to adopt them should you feel the same in September. ;)

Elizabeth said...

I agree with the others - they're gorgeous. Hopefully you'll feel better about them in the fall.

Steve and I saw someone the other day and both thought she looked like you. But she was wearing strappy sandals and I said, "But Ali would wear that with Maryjanes."

And those socks would have absolutely topped off the outfit.

If you still don't love the socks by winter, they'd make a lovely Christmas gift....

Peevish said...

Oh yeah, Mooky has the right idea - they're almost as gorgeous as his eyes!

Thay're lovely! I'm just waiting for you to start stepping as if in a céilí.

I've found a solution to your different sized socks. Just swap feet! We all have different sized feet, you know ;-)

I understand sock fatigue -- i'm in the middle of it myself. but trust me (and everyone else) when I/we say that these socks are beautiful! I bet when the weather turns cold and that fall snap is in the air, you'll be able to love them again!

Veronique said...

"Meh"?! Are you kidding? I think they're beautiful!

lomester said...

Shoot! Veronique stole my comment. Word for word.

Socks are beautiful. Wait until it's winter and you want something cozy--you'll fall in love with them again.

Have fun at Crotch!

claudia said...

Indeed, those are very pretty. But I can completely understand you being tired of looking at them.

I love them!! I agree -- put em away for a while and when you get them back out in the Fall, you'll be as taken with them as we all are. :)
