Oh, sew thrifty

I went to the nearby V.V. last weekend, and for the first time in ages I bought some clothes. The shirt above is interesting -- it's a little bit stained, and it has a hole in it, so I haven't decided if I should try to clean/repair it or if I should take it apart to use as a pattern and then put the fabric in my future-dream-quilt box. It's hard to tell -- I didn't realize it until I tried it on -- but the shirt's buttons are not down the centre. The fronts are asymmetrical, and then there is just the one pocket, which is on the wider side. But the fronts overlap in such a way that the polka-dot pattern is maintained. Zany. Anyway, I'd like to try to sew a top like this someday.

My next sewing project is going to be another dress, in this blue vintage fabric that I bought at a thrift store so long ago that I don't even remember what city I was in. I'm going to use the Simplicity 4116 pattern again, but view D, or maybe view C without the ruffle sleeves. I might cut out the pieces this weekend; then again, I might try to finish my Josephine Top this weekend. There are a few finished versions on Ravelry that are inspiring me to finish, plus a Google blog search turns up some lovely Josephines like this one and this one.

It's so hot and humid here that I feel like I'm in Taiwan or Thailand. The only reason I'm conscious right now is because I've had a fan pointed straight at me all day. Ugh.

Love the new top. I secretly hope you completely take it apart and make something new!
It's super humid here too, and of course this is the day that I moved :( Good thing there's already wireless internet at my new place...

I love the polka dot fabric of the blouse. Go V V boutique.

The vintage blue fabric is lovely.

I wonder if the new top is really kind of an apron or coverup? The tag looks familiar. I think I had an apron with the same manufacturer's tag.

Love the blue fabric - it'll make a great dress!

Ugh - is the heat supposed to break soon? Ours did last night - but it's supposed to be nasty again Friday or Saturday. At least I have air.

This is a great fabric. You should definately use it for a dream-quilt. It would be great!

The thrifted fabric is adorable and will make a great dress - maybe with some orange (?) trim to match the flowers? Hang in there with the crazy weather!

It's been ridiculous here too, but I'm hoping yesterday's rain helped the temperature to cool.

The blue fabric is beautiful. Can't wait to see the dress!

It rained like crazy for us yesterday in London Ontario, and now we're expecting a week of lovely weather. I hope it broke for you too.

Josephine is so pretty - you should finish soon so we can see!

Before you take apart the shirt to make a pattern out of it, check around for a book on drafting patterns from purchased garments. I can't recall the name of the book, but my local library has an older book on this topic. And I have seen it demonstrated on a show long ago, possibly 'Sewing with Nancy' on PBS in the US.

I made it to your favourite thrift store last Friday. I got two great books...and something for you. Watch the mail.

And I'm a total slacker about putting things in the real mail (we need email that sends packages -- like a really big attachment), so you'll likely have a long wait. No breath holding.

That's a really interesting polka dotted top -- I'm not sure which option I would suggest. It's kind of cool as is, but would make really interesting quilt material, and taking it apart to recreate the pattern could be fun....my cats think you should make a cool polka dotted fabric tunnel for kitties to play in (they are very self-centered little beasts)....
