Review: Mason-Dixon Knitting: Outside the Lines

I've been sitting on this book review for a week, and I'm feeling pretty hesitant. You see, I like Mason-Dixon Knitting, I really do; I even spent at least fifteen seconds chatting with authors Ann Shayne and Kay Gardiner at Morehouse Merino during last year's Rhinebeck, so I know they actually are both nice and funny. Also, all the other reviews I've seen are on the gushing side of positive. But me? I can't figure out how to fit this book into my life -- and that's why I'm going to give it away. Would you like it?

This is both a pattern book and a humour book; check out the subtitle ("Patterns, Stories, Pictures, True Confessions, Tricky Bits, Whole New Worlds, and Familiar Ones, Too"). The patterns come from Kay and Ann as well as from other familiar designers (e.g., Bonne Marie Burns, Anna Bell). There is, literally, something for everyone, with projects for women, kids, babies, and the home. (OK, not so much for men -- or, specifically, for men who don't use a Swiffer.) (Of course, the socks could be made for men.) There are patterns for clothing, accessories, kitchen items, and holiday decorations. My favourite designs are the red-and-robin's-egg-blue Liberty blanket and the Super Eggplant-inspired Kiki Mariko rug. Lovely!

Alongside the thirty-odd patterns is plenty of sassy Mason-Dixon writing. These are funny ladies. They use terms like "Loonyville," "Bathrobe Syndrome," and "the holy crap moment." The best part about these sections is that they are actually useful, providing tips about calculating ease when knitting a sweater, steeking, felting, knitting in the round on two circs, and so on. There's a lot of practical info in this book, and it's fun to read, to boot.

So... what's my problem? Sounds like a good review, right? Here's where my hesitation comes in. It is a good book, but as I mentioned at the outset, it just doesn't fit me. Strictly as a pattern book, it contains only a couple of patterns I actually want to knit. On the other hand, as a knitting info/humour book, it's too big. That's right -- I have a problem with the size of this book. Much of its content is the kind of stuff I want to read when I'm in the tub, or in bed, but it's in this huge hardcover book. That's my problem.

If you'd like to take this enormous* book off my hands, just leave a comment telling me what your favourite knitting book was/is this year. I'll draw a name in some random way on Monday night.

* I exaggerate. The book measures 9 inches by 11.5 inches.

Entry cut-off is 6:00 p.m. Montreal time!

Better than a chance at winning the book is discovering your blog. Thank you for writing it!

My favorite knitting book this year? I'll go along with many others: Cat Bordhi's New Pathways for Sock Knitters. I've only knit three socks in my life (not three pair, mind you; three socks) but her imaginative thinking blows me away.

Knit So Fine: Designs with Skinny Yarn (Myers et al), this is my favorite book so far but I haven't tried out any patterns yet.

My favorite purchased book was Eclectic Sole by Janel Laidman (wonderful and unusual sock patterns) but the best one I read was Alice Starmore's Aran Knitting. One day I have my own copy of that book.

I really like this book that I've found this year- not sure if this is new or not...http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/knit-one-embellish-too-hats-mittens-and-scarves-with-a-twist Yes, pub'd in May of this year. Anyway, I love the hats in this book...so beautiful but simple in the lines. :D Hope you'll like it as much as I did as I stumbled upon it at a big box craft store. I knew one of the hats shown and squealed when I realized what I'd found. :D

Even though I have owned the first Mason-Dixon Knitting book for a while now, and have knit several of the patterns from it, I just recently actually *read* it. And now I want to read the new one.

My favorite book this year was Knitalong: Celebrating the Tradition of Knitting Together by Larrisa Golden Brown and Martin John Brown. I was kind of on the same boat as you with this book, in that there wasn't a whole lot I would actually knit out of it, but it would be great to read. On the other hand, it was so positively small in stature, that lugging it around the house (and into the tub) to read wasn't a problem at all. Yay! I love reading in the tub!

i love the Yarn Harlot, so I guess my favourite knitting book is her new one, Free Range Knitting.

Knitting New Mittens & Gloves by Robin Melanson is a fab book. I am on a limited budget as well but always find money for books because I love them so. Got laid off from my job on Sept. 15th, just before the second MDK book came out. So sad. I love the first one. I went and held the new one at the bookstore today and contemplated using my 30% off coupon but made the decision to wait until I have a job again. Must take care of those children!

Thanks for the great blog. I have enjoyed reading it for a long time.

OK, I had to join in the fun, because your bra entries were so good, and because it seem like maybe you use parentheses like I do (a good thing, in my opinion). I'm glad Kay and Ann sent folks over here; it's always good to find a new good blog. As for new knitting books, my favorite one this year was The Knitter's Book of Yarn, not just because the patterns are good (they are), but because I absolutely loved the discussion of fiber and yarn construction.

I'd have to vote for "A Fine Fleece" seeing as how my DH and I were given his family heirloom spinning wheel as a wedding present this year! I've barely had a chance to learn how to use it, but the mason dixon book could give me just the inspiration I need. ;)

Things I Learned From Knitting by Stephanie Pearl-McPhee. It's miniscule in size compared to the Mason Dixon book. Although there's no patterns, there's plenty of humor. A great size for the bathtub.

Don't tell Steph, but when I read this one aloud to my hubby at night, it puts him to sleep. It's really a win-win. He gets to sleep early, I get to keep reading without interruption (except the snoring).

I'm looking forward to the new MD book, and maybe instead of reading it to my hubby, I can just knock him out with it and put him to sleep. Think that would work?

Knitting Around another Zimmermann classic is great for bathtub or bed reading and is my favorite for this year (although it isn't a new release, neither is Pride and Prejudice which was recently featured at our local Border books in the "New Fiction" category!). The Pi-R squared shawl is great. OK, the humor may not be as up to date as MDK but if size matters, it is the right size for tub reading!

My favorite knitting book this year, as it has been every year since 1983 is Knitter's Almanac by Elizabeth Zimmerman. She cracks me up and inspires me besides. My favorite knitting book published this year is The Eclectic Sole by Janel Laidman (such a catchy title). My fav published this year but of OLD patterns is Kunststricken - Schoene historishe Muster, since I think of old doily patterns as mind-altering mini-crop circles.

I am waiting for Mason-Dixon to BE my favorite book of the year. I am a dishrag knitter, in the winning team - Duces Wild in Yarn Miracles - 2008 Dish Rag Tag.

Mason - Dixon are/is my muse I await a copy of this book, I long for a copy of Knitting Outside the Lines.

So far this year, my favorites are two books I picked up at the local library benifit. A 20 year old Kaffe Fassett- Family Album.
And the 16 year old-Sweaters-28 Contemporary Designs in the Norwegian Tradition. These are my DROOL books. I will probably a never make anything from them. I will drool at colors and cross my eyes at the complex patterns.
I am currently unemployed, and being mildly allergic to wool so buying 45 skeins of anything will not happen this year.

I will be knitting from Mason-Dixon, well, because, you know Christmas is coming up!

My favorite book so far this year was A Fine Fleece by Lisa Lloyd. My copy has inspired many of my friends to get one of their own!!! I love how the patterns are worked with handspun & commercial yarns. I not only love the option but I can also use it to check my stash for an "example yarn" of what I'm trying to spin to use to knit my garment.

Hope I win so I can check out the new Mason-Dixon book!

I really like your blog and appreciate your honest review of this book. I just bought Knit So Fine and intend to knit most of the patterns.

I've just picked up More Big Girl Knits by Singer and Moreno. I see a couple of things I'll have to knit!

Favorite knitting book this YEAR? How about this moment? I'm torn between "Knitting Rules" and "Opinionated Knitter"...and...I can't get enough.

I know what you mean about huge hardcover books not fitting into an environment for leisurely perusal of knitting-related writing (how's that for a mouthful)? Anyhow, my favorite knitting book this year is The Knitter's Book of Yarn -- such a cute little encyclopedic reference of yarn info with the sweetest patterns to boot.

Another vote for A Fine Fleece. I've become much pickier about buying books now that there are a gazillion on the market, but I had to buy this one as there were several patterns I'd like to make.

I hope you plan to list all the wonderful books commented on. What a great resource. I've enjoyed most of the books already mentioned, but have to agree with those who recommended A Fine Fleece--gorgeous patterns.

Eep, 360 comments! And I'm sneaking in just under the wire.

i love Oddball Knitting. I'm poor, so I generally buy only 1 or 2 skeins of yarn at a time; enough to make something small but leaving inconvenient amounts of leftovers. The patterns are simple, modern, and pretty.

I really enjoyed Amy Singer's "No Sheep for You" - both for the patterns and for the wonderful information on all things non-wooly

Well, seeing as I made it in under the wire, count me in for the heavy book draw!

Barbara Walker's Learn to Knit Afghan. I kind of know how to knit, but this book is helping me complete a promised wedding afghan for a favorite nephew.

I just bought Cat Bordhi's New Pathways for Sock Knitters last week and am looking forward to trying her new techniques. I would love to win the Mason-Dixon book as I really like the Pea Coat pattern amongst others.

So far, my favorite book this year was "New Pathways for Sock Knitters". Not that I've even attempted one of the pattern yet, but Cat Bordhi just astounds me.

I've spent most of this year reading Patricia Wentworth's mystery novels with knitting sleuth Miss Maude Silver. Agatha Christie's Miss Jane Marple came first, but I love them both the same. Not much about knitting, but good reads nonetheless.
