Plain mitten perfection

Mittens are finished! It just took a few evenings of TV watching to complete the pair. They are thick and sturdy -- I wore them out today, but it wasn't cold enough and I ended up taking them off. These are mid-winter snowman-building mittens. Have a closer look at one:

That photo alone makes me want to go outside and make a snowball. I used most of a 100g ball of worsted-weight 100% wool; there's probably enough left over for a through-the-sleeves i-cord, if one were so inclined.

It's tricky at best to photograph mittens on one's own hands (Dear Santa: A tiny tripod, please!), so instead I have a perspective-challenging shot for you:

This is now my default mitten pattern. They may have had less yarn to work with in the postwar years, but they knew it was worth using a little more for a sturdy mitten that will probably outlive its knitter.

Those are great! And I love the picture at the bottom. It's funny sometimes how lacking the right tools can force you to come up with something creative (but it sure would be nice to have all those tools!)

I agree, that picture is genius. And plain mittens are very satisfying, both to knit and wear.

So retro! ;) A GorillaPod is a pretty cool wee tripod...

They're great! And it's so cool that you used a 40s pattern. Have fun in the snow!

I agree with Chris on the GorillaPod - fun to get pics of the whole family, too.

Love the grey mittens. Let it snow!

Sometimes the simpliest patterns make the prettiest knitted items. Nice mittens :)

Did you just commit to a building-a-snowman shot in the middle of Winter? I hope so :)

They look great. It is amazing what a good pattern can do. We're also on a mitten kick..counting down for Christmas.

I love how workman like the mittens are, though when I got to the part about photographing them I was kind of expecting to see the mittens plopped on the end of your feet.

Those are great mittens! Nice simple shaping - they fit you well. Where did you find the pattern? We don't have snow here yet (Northern California) but it gets chilly at night and in the early morning. Enjoy your mittens!

So classic! They are perfect, and they make me wish that it was colder over here. (something I hardly ever wish for)

Wow! Snow already. Seems like just yesterday it was melting! I've just had Danny Mackay of Karachi nee Montreal staying with me. His ex also visited from Taiwan. We drove to Gold Coast, Byron Bay, New England, then did the vineyards in the Hunter Valley, and finally Sydney. Was a wonderful trip.
