So 1968!

In her pattern for the Shocking pink coif (see my last post), Megan explains that she was inspired by a cap found in a costume shop, which she figured was "supposed to be a Medieval biggen or coif." That's what I'm going to tell people, even though I have a knitting booklet from 1968 that features the "Earwarmer" patterns above. (They're pretty cute, though, aren't they? Just not as romantic as a biggen or a coif.)

I picked up this booklet -- called "Teach Yourself To Knit The Easy Columbia-Minerva Way" -- a couple of weeks ago for 49 cents at V@lue Vill@ge. I'm not especially interested in designs from the late '60s, but there are a few patterns in here that I like, including this basic baby set:

Actually, I think it's the birds in that shot that I like best. And I would've paid double (98 cents!) just to post this shot for my weiner-dog-loving friend 2L:

wow, I love that baby set too!

The babyset is hands-down adorable. The earwarmer is pretty darn cute, too. It's got a slightly different vibe than Coif, but serves the same excellent purpose.

I have that booklet! But I got ripped off - I paid 69¢+tax (US).

Looks like evil hot pink is telling naive blue some shocking secret!

Oh, I need to make the weiner dog sweater only wider to fit my Basset Hound. She loved to wear sweaters when she was a puppy, but they were always too short on her (more like belly shirts...she is far too modest for a belly shirt).

weiner dog!! aw, i need to make that sweater for my roommate's dog, Sophie. I've actually been contemplating making her a dog sweater ... she's always so cold!

I love all these pictures you have from old patterns! I normally cringe at dog outfits but that's seriously the coolest thing ever.

I love the dog outfit!! That looks remarkable like my weiner dog only she is… ahem… somewhat more petite.

What a funny looking dog!

Maybe the Minerva folks were inspired by the long-ago coif as well. I actually remember earwarmers like that from my childhood.

I really like the baby ensemble. So timeless!

(Thanks, btw, for the Knitty link. I just finished my coif with your adaption.)

I have that book! Mine must be an older version because it is in black&white and has different models, but the patterns are the same. My late mother-in-law had it in her stash of acrylic yarns along with other vintage pattern books. Those vintage pattern books are fun to look at and actually do have some good, classic patterns.

good gracious, is that woman wearing...a dickie?? Worth it for the pics alone, agreed. I love vintage patterns.

I've had that booklet since I was little, so seeing those girls in ear-head-hoods was like seeing an old illustration from a kid's book -- you know that RECOGNITION moment that feels so nice? Richard Scarry books do that to me, too. I didn't know I had a childhood knitting trigger.....

I have that book too! Got it from my g-ma! I plan to make the baby set sometime.

I knit a coif in about 3 hours from cast on to the time it hit the bath. and was it ever worth it! I've been way warmer than I would have been in 16 degrees F. Thanks again for reminding me.

What strikes me about the earwarmers picture is how cruel the blonde girl looks, with her cold clear eyes and sharp tiny teeth! *shudder* I agree with Veronique - this child looks like she loves the taste of a nasty rumor.
