Va-va-Volver!

Bill and I went to see Volver on Saturday night. I loved it. How refreshing to see a movie full of women, for a change! Four days later, I can't stop thinking about this movie. Is this because of its depiction of strong female characters overcoming difficulty? Their snappy dialogue? The film's vivid and colourful mise-en-scène? Ms. Cruz's convincing performance? Not particularly.

It's because of the cardigans.

Oh my goodness, the cardigans in this movie! Do you remember? A parade of colourful lace cardigans! Stunning knitwear, my friends. I found a few images to refresh your memory, if you've seen the film:

~ Raimunda's fabulous red lace cardigan (which reminds me of Laura's sexy Serrano)
~ a better look at the red cardigan's sleeve
~ Raimunda's green leaf-lace cardi and her mother's pale blue zig-zag number (and from another scene, here)
~ a rather unsatisfying shot of Raimunda's purple lace cardi

The wardrobe designer for Volver should win an Oscar: Best Knitwear in a Starring Role.

LOL! I have to see this movie. I've caught myself checking out knitwear in movies, on tv, and in public, a lot lately. It's really funny.

I love the apron one character is wearing in the kitchen shot, the woman standing at the stove.

I have intentions (and a cone of Shetland jumperweight) to make Serrano. I love a lace cardi.

Oh, that green lace one! I never find myself liking bright green like that, but now...

Note to self: must see Volver.

I was so energized by that movie. It was incredibly exciting to see so many great women's roles in a single movie. And the knitting. There are a few crochet cameos in there too. Great film.

That kind of cardigans are called "rebeca" in spanish, they are name that way after the Alfred Hitchcock' film Rebecca.
I didn't feel like watching that movie but after your review you can be sure I will ;)

I went to see Pan's Labyrinth last week due to a knitter friend's lust after a sweater in that movie. I guess you know you're addicted to knitting when you go to the movies to see the sweaters.... xo -xtina (A Fistful of Stitches)

Cate Blanchett wore some nice handknits in Notes on a Scandal, as well - a scarf and two pretty sweaters.

I haven't seen the film myself but a friend of mine who's also a knitter has and he told me exactly the same thing. I did it myself all the time while watching the recent Miss Marple films. Not so much her knitting as the sweaters that came right out of the vintage books you collect.

My friends and I all drooled over the sweaters in Volver and Pan's Labyrinth. Thanks for the pictures! Now, if I could only got a pattern for the green cardigan...

I just saw Volver this past week and found your blog while searching for patterns for Raimunda's cardis...WOW! My new-year knitting goal is to try some new techniques; now I"m thinking I'll have to just design one to resemble hers. It's not just the cardis...it's how she combines them with colour and other fabrics (tweedy skirts, green cardi with purple under shirt...) They need to publish a book of those sweater patterns! I'll share if I successfully copy one, though I've never designed anything...yet!
