Montreal smoked wheat

That's right. You heard me. I said "Montreal smoked wheat." This city may be famous for smoked meat, but what's a vegetarian to do? Enter the smoked wheat sandwich:

You know what? It's not bad! I've never actually eaten smoked meat; I quit meat in early 1991 and first moved to Montreal in late 1991, so it was too late. (Ditto for poutine. I know, I know -- don't rat me out to the locals.) So I can't say whether or not it resembles smoked meat at all. And I know that not all vegetarians are as into fake meat as I am -- I think it rules. I don't want to eat it every day (or, frankly, every week), but overall, a thumbs up for smoked wheat!

Can I get this awesome T-shirt now?

Longtime veggie here. I'm an actual born Montreal who has never eaten smoked meat or poutine in their true varieties. I guess I should say "yet" because you never know. But I wanted to recommend the veggie poutine at Mondo Fritz for you. It's also got real cheese instead of curds (my other issue with our "national" dish). It's delish, veggie and fancy even!

born MontrealER, of course.

i think that looks scrumptious. poutine, on the other hand, may or may not be possible to make in a redeemable form.

looks interesting! I'm not a vegetarian, but I only eat meat about once or twice a week and I love fake meet! Especially Morning Star. I could eat those buffalo wings every day!

Sure you can get the t-shirt. I wonder if you can get one saying smoked wheat?

And the smoked wheat sounds so much better than the smoked meat. And the poutine just sounds really bad. And I will not tell....

I'm not a veggie, but I've never had either poutine or smoked meat. Neither have ever sounded appealing to me (what sort of "meat" is it anyway?). I've been eyeing the 5 roses shirt on that site for a long time. I may have to splurge one of these days, or is that just lame to walk around Montreal in a Montreal t-shirt?

Smoked wheat? A sandwich? That is definitely not what I thought when I saw the title of your post. I thought you had discovered some subculture of Montreal.

I rarely eat meat (Well, red meat. Smoked meat is beef, right?), but I had to have a smoked meat sandwich while in Montreal last January. My dad, who visited Montreal with my mom annually after attending Expo '67, would have been disappointed in me for not having one. I have to say, it was a damned good sandwich.

We have a print of Andy Warhol's Cow on the wall of our kitchen. She looks down upon us with a benign smile like the Blessed Virgin. It really makes me appreciate my grass-fed beef. I feel almost saintly...Moo!
